The future market of energy

This story is what the future of energy is all about:

The company stuck solar panels on UCSF’s Genentech Hall as well as a nearby parking garage. MMA owns the panels and sells the power to the school, under a contract that locks in electricity prices for the next 20 years. The rates are lower than Pacific Gas & Electric’s, and the school didn’t have to pay for the panels up front.

“It’s very simple – we got someone else to take on the headaches, and we get the power,” said Maric Munn, the school’s director of facilities management.

In other words, generation of energy needs to become more localized and democratized in the same way that PCs changed the information generation model from mainframe and slaves to networked peers.

The advantage of diesel in this model is that it has many more options than most power generators — the input can come from virtually anywhere. Thus if the output is standardized, the market for micro-generation could explode.

Excellent story.

Mobile Brothel Busted

An undercover investigation by the Florida police, as told on Officer.com, has revealed a brothel operating in a strange location:

A sleek, black limousine bus parked just a block from Miami Beach Police Department headquarters was being used as a brothel on wheels, a place where clients could come to solicit sex from prostitutes, police said.

Ok, so that was obviously a bad idea, but does anyone know if Krispy Kreme has thought about a bus full of donuts…?

Just when you thought it was safe to go in the shower…

Those crafty environmentalists have pointed out yet another control gap in consumer safety.

A study commissioned by the Center for Health, Environment, and Justice looked at the chemical composition of PVC shower curtains bought at a variety of retailers (from Sears to Bed Bath & Beyond). They found, unsurprisingly, that shower curtains contain high levels of phthalates. They also found high level of organotins, and the single shower curtain tested for off-gassing released 108 different volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

How would you know? Might be a good idea to design showers with no need for a curtain.
